What is a percentage?
A percentage is a hundredth part of a whole. Writing 18% means 18 parts out of a hundred, which is the fraction 18/100 = 0.18. That is why any percentage question can be turned into a multiplication or a division — you only have to convert the percentage into a decimal first.
The three types of percentage question
School really only asks three: find a percentage of a number (18% of 250), find what percentage one number is of another (45 out of 250), and find the whole from one of its percentages (45 is 18% — what is the total). Each type has its own calculator here.
Percentage points versus percentages
A rise from 20% to 25% is a rise of 5 percentage points, but of 25% in relative terms. That distinction is the single most common slip in exam questions and in the press, so the percentage change calculator shows both figures side by side.
