What percentage one number is of another

Find the percentage share one number has of another — for instance what percentage of 250 the number 45 makes up. The calculator shows the working and the answer at once.

Percentage share
18%

45 is 18% of 250.

Formula

p=XY· 100%

X is the number whose share you want and Y is the whole. Multiplying by 100 turns the fraction into a percentage.

How we got there

45 ÷ 250 · 100 = 18%

If X is larger than Y the answer goes above 100% — that is correct, and means the first number exceeds the whole.

How to work out a percentage share by hand

  1. Divide the part by the whole

    45 ÷ 250 = 0.18. That decimal describes the share.

  2. Multiply by 100

    0.18 × 100 = 18%. Multiplying by a hundred turns the decimal into a percentage.

  3. Check which way round you divided

    The whole belongs on the bottom. Dividing the other way (250 ÷ 45) gives 555%, which is obviously wrong.

Enter the part as X and the whole as Y. Swapping them gives the reciprocal answer.

Yes, when the first number is larger than the second. It simply means the part exceeds the value taken as the whole.
