With an odd degree the root of a negative number exists and is negative. With an even degree it has no real value.

- Turn the root into a power
The fifth root of 1024 is 1024^(1/5).
- Look for the number that works
You are asking which number to the fifth power gives 1024. The answer is 4, because 4⁵ = 1024.
- Check by raising to the power
Raise your answer to the degree of the root — the original number should come back.
