Formula

c=√(a² + b²)

a and b are the legs and c the hypotenuse — the longest side, opposite the right angle.

How we got there

√(3² + 4²) = √25 = 5.0000

The theorem holds only in a right-angled triangle. The hypotenuse is always longer than either leg.

How to use Pythagoras by hand

  1. Square both known sides

    For 3 and 4: 3² = 9 and 4² = 16.

  2. Add the squares if you want the hypotenuse

    9 + 16 = 25.

  3. Take the square root

    √25 = 5. That is the hypotenuse.

  4. For a leg, subtract instead of adding

    b = √(c² − a²). For c = 5 and a = 3: √(25 − 9) = √16 = 4.
