Mass unit converter
Convert milligrams, grams, kilograms and tonnes, as well as ounces and pounds. The calculator shows the multiplier so you can see where the answer comes from.
1 kilogram (kg) is 1000 gram (g).
Formula
x is the input value and k the multiplier. Every unit is converted into kilograms first.
How we got there
Metric mass multipliers are powers of a thousand: milligram, gram, kilogram, tonne.
How to convert mass units by hand
- Convert the value into kilograms
The kilogram is the base unit. 1 t = 1000 kg, 1 g = 0.001 kg, 1 mg = 0.000001 kg.
- Divide by the target unit
To get grams, divide the kilograms by 0.001 — that is, multiply by 1000.
- Remember the steps of a thousand
Between milligram and gram, gram and kilogram, and kilogram and tonne the multiplier is 1000 each time.
