Area unit converter
Convert square millimetres, centimetres and metres, as well as ares, hectares and square kilometres. The calculator shows the squared multiplier.
1 square metre (m²) is 10000 square centimetre (cm²).
Formula
x is the input value and k the multiplier. For area the length multiplier is squared.
How we got there
A metre is 100 centimetres, but a square metre is already 10,000 square centimetres. That is the classic slip in these questions.
How to convert area units by hand
- Find the length multiplier
From metres to centimetres it is 100.
- Square the multiplier
Area has two dimensions, so 100 becomes 100² = 10,000.
- Multiply the value by it
1 m² × 10,000 = 10,000 cm².
