How we got there
Some fractions give a recurring decimal, such as 1/3 = 0.3333… The calculator rounds to four decimal places.
How to convert a fraction to a decimal by hand
- Read the fraction as a division
5/8 is simply 5 divided by 8.
- Carry out the division
5 ÷ 8 = 0.625.
- Spot a recurring decimal
If the denominator has factors other than 2 and 5, the decimal recurs — as in 1/3 = 0.333…
