The mode is the value that appears most often in a set. The calculator finds it along with how many times it occurs, and copes with several modes at once.

Mo=max n(xᵢ)

n(xᵢ) is how many times a value occurs. The mode is the value for which that count is highest.

How we got there

12, 18, 24 → 1×

A set can have more than one mode. If every value appears once, there is no mode at all.

How to find the mode by hand

  1. Count how many times each value occurs

    It helps to write it as a list: 4 — twice, 5 — once, 3 — once.

  2. Find the highest count

    Two in this example. That is how often the most frequent value appears.

  3. List every value with that count

    If several values share the highest count, they are all modes and the set is multimodal.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. If two values tie for the highest count, both are modes.
